‘Spider-Man 4’: Jon Watts Reveals Why He Didn’t Return As Director For The MCU Project

Jon Watts breaks his silence!

Marvel Jon Watts Spider-Man Homecoming Spider-Man No Way Home MCU Director

Jon Watts finally spills the beans! The beloved director reveals why he left the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind in lieu of helming the highly-anticipated Spider-Man 4.

Spider-Man 4 is the MCU project people have been salivating for any piece of news. However, the film seems to be held up by a search for a new director after Jon Watts departed the project. Given he directed every other one of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films, Marvel fans were left scratching their heads as to why he left. Now it seems they finally have their answer!

“That was such a specific moment in time, and the reaction to that movie was just so unbelievable,” Watts told The Hollywood Reporter when asked why he didn’t return to helm another Spider-Man film in the MCU. “It’s never going to be like this, ever again.”

“I was just getting started and Marvel came along — and I take full creative ownership over all those films — but Spider-Man is always going to be Stan Lee and Steve Ditko‘s creation,” he says. “This was the chance for me to go back to my voice and my vision and my style. Wolfs is mine, and that’s a really good feeling.”

Given how massive of a success Spider-Man: No Way Home was, it makes sense that Jon Watts felt he wouldn’t be able to replicate that achievement with Spider-Man 4. The MCU certainly has a lot riding on Tom Holland’s next project as the web-head, with all signs pointing to them going a radically new direction in order to show a different side of the character. However, who the director ends up being for this film seems to still be up in the air.

Who Will Helm Spider-Man 4?

A lot of names have been thrown into the hat as potential directors for Spider-Man 4. This includes names familiar to MCU fans, such as the beloved Sam Raimi, and names that would bring fresh blood to Tom Holland’s upcoming trilogy, such as Justin Lin and Drew Goddard, all of which would bring a much different tone to the series than Jon Watts did before them.

However, it seems the person currently serving as the frontrunner to take over for Jon Watts isn’t just one director, but two. Rumors suggest that former Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are being eyed to helm Spider-Man 4. Given their recent box office success with Bad Boys: Ride or Die, it would only make sense for the duo to bring their action expertise to Tom Holland’s MCU series.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Spider-Man’s Marvel Cinematic Universe future and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
